In this weeks “Great Fat Loss Debate” with Scott Tousignant and Scott Colby we cover the topic of quick workouts and interval training. Are long duration workouts and distance training really a waste of your time…

I certainly don’t think so. I personally can’t stand it when I hear fitness professionals tell you to give up long distance training because it’s not effective. I believe they are contributing more to the problem and are a serious contributor to the mass confusion.

Are quick 10 minute workouts effective for fat loss? Heck ya they are. I do them myself. Are quick 15 minute interval training sessions effective for fat loss? Sure they are. Again, I do them myself and so does my wife Angie.

I’ve created 10 minute home workouts in both my Fit Chic and Fit Bastard year of workouts. If I didn’t think they worked they wouldn’t be in my books.

But the most common praise that I get about my workout books is all about the variety of training and the mix between long duration and quick workouts.

Hey man, I go out for brisk walks. Is it the most effective thing for fat burning. No, probably not. But it does contribute to my overall success. By telling me to give that up and just stick with 10 minute workouts or less is robbing me of so many pleasures in life.

The long walks clear my head and prepare me for my day. I get some of my best ideas during those walks. I spot many wild animals and feel a connection to my surroundings and my purpose in life.

When I do my quick intense workouts, it’s all business baby! There’s no thinking or clearing my head. It’s all focused on each movement and giving every ounce of my being to that training session. And I love that too.

Many of my weight training sessions are under 20 minutes. And there are several months during the year where I train for 60 minutes.

Right now I’m in fat burning mode. My goal is 5% body fat by April 2nd and I’ve scheduled a photo shoot for that day. So right now I’ve really reduced my rest periods and fit more exercises in less time. This is working for me right now.

I’m actually doing 2 a days for cardio on most days. I do my long brisk walks first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and I do 12 minutes of cardio interval training later in the day. Plus 4 days of weight training.

After my goal date I’m going to sign up at a local gym that’s in an ex-bodybuilders garage. This is where all the big guys hang out. I figure the best way to put on muscle is to surround myself with big muscular guys. That should be cool.

So now I want to hear your questions and comments on the topic of quick workouts. Do they work for you? Do you prefer to distance train? Are you just totally confused?

It’s your turn to voice your opinion. Simply click on the comment button and share a piece of your mind.
