How To Prevent Shoulder Injuries

Today’s post is in response to a great question from Paul, one of your fellow Unstoppable Fat Loss blog readers…

“Hey Scott,

I am on the shelf this week as I heal yet another injury this time to my left pec. I was wondering if you had some tips on how to not get injured. I do warm up with cardio, stretch (although I don’t know if I’m doing it long enough or correctly)

Over the past decade, the most frequent injury is upper back and shoulder. I think that I’ve probably over-trained the large muscles and not enough on the smaller supporting ones.

Since I eliminated the bench press my shoulder is 85% better. Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks”

Here’s my video response and I will follow it up with a written summary:

Spending 5 minutes on the treadmill or stationary bike prior to your workout is a good idea. It will elevate your heart rate and body temperature while getting your blood pumping through your body and oxygen flowing to your brain.

I like to use this time to mentally prepare for the workout and block out any potential distractions. But…

Boost Your Metabolism With This At Home Cardio Challenge

You’ll never hear me bash long duration cardio like many other fat loss experts. Although I rarely jog I do love going for 30 minute bike rides during the warmer months. My physique has been created using a combination of long duration cardio, interval training, resistance training, healthy nutrition, and dedication to developing an unstoppable mindset.

Long duration cardio does have it’s place in an active and healthy lifestyle and it certainly does contribute to an effective fat loss program. But when it comes to seriously boosting your metabolism it’s the shorter, more intense, interval type cardio combined with resistance exercises that really does the trick.

But the success of any fat loss program all boils down to compliance… Sticking with it and following through for the long term. I have found that the best way to comply with a fat loss program is to add the ‘FUN’ element to it. If you do something that you enjoy it will be easier to stick with.

One of the ways that I like to make at home cardio fun is by turning it into a challenge. Here’s one fun at home cardio session that presents a fun challenge as well…

Fun At Home Cardio Challenge

I absolutely love it when I see one of my blog readers take me up on a challenge and share how the experience went for them. The video below is by a gentleman who goes by the name “Fat Old Man”. ;)

When Do You Burn The Most Calories?

Fat Loss Expert Scott TousignantWhen it comes to fat loss I’m sure that you’re always on the lookout for a workout program that will burn the most calories in the shortest time possible. You can definitely find plenty of programs on the market that are very efficient and effective at burning fat in just minutes a day. But even if the workout program that you are following has ignited your metabolic furnace for 48 hours after the workout it will never be the source of where the majority of your calories are burned throughout the day.

Most of the calories that you burn throughout the day come from what you do with yourself during the remainder of your day. Unfortunately many people spend those hours sitting at a desk working or on the couch watching the television.

When you sit your body is only burning approximately 60-70 calories per hour. If you fall into that category of spending the majority of time with your backside parked in the seated position you are really missing out on the opportunity to burn some extra calories in a fun and entertaining way. You’re also prolonging the time period that it will take for you to sculpt the body that you deserve.

Performing your workout and cardio sessions on a regular basis are fantastic, but it’s just not enough. You need to get moving more often throughout the rest of your day. But this doesn’t have to be a tedious task.

If you have kids you are lucky. They are the best piece of equipment that money can’t buy. Shayne and Noelle are 8 and 6. They keep Angie and I on our toes all day long. Here’s some of the fun ways that we stay active as a family…

Spring Forward Into Fitness

I woke up at 6am this morning and was so excited to get out for my morning walk. It was still dark. I love this because it’s very quiet and I feel so centered while walking and listening to the birds chirping. I also caught a few glimpses of some bunnies hopping around! (Hiding those eggs, I bet:) ) My walks not only help me to maintain my physical health, but are also very therapeutic for me.

I find that my thoughts get more organized and many of my concerns get sorted out or ‘answered’ you could say. I feel a wonderful calmness inside when I walk in the stillness of the early morning.

Fitness Deal Of The Century

I have never seen an opportunity like this in the fitness industry. Trust me, you are going to want to keep reading and click on the links below. This is all thanks to my friend Nick Nilsson, the most creative fitness guru out there. He’s so creative that he’s adopted the nick name “Mad Scientist”.

Angie and I have both experienced great success with Nick’s workout programs over the past 4 years. I have also been using his programs to help my personal training clients achieve phenomenal results.

I gained six and a half pounds of lean muscle mass in just 28 days with his “Muscle Explosion” program. Angie firmed up her thighs and tightened her butt with Nick’s “Gluteus To The Maximus” program. This is also the program that I put many of my female clients through as well as some of the guys who want to build a butt because theirs is flat.

Lets face it. When you get a new workout program you expect to learn something new. Often times you discover that it’s the same old recycled crap on the market. One thing that I can guarantee with Nick’s programs is that you will learn something new from each one.

Here’s The Great News…

Keep Your Fitness Within A Budget

Achieving a rock, solid body does not need to cost you a fortune. Heck, it doesn’t even need to cost you a dime! Your own body weight can be utilized to help you to achieve those 6 pack abs you’ve always wished you had. What do you need to do?

To start, you need to make a plan on when you will do your cardio component. You should aim for at least 5 days/week to get your heart rate up. You may walk, jog, skip, bike, do jumping jacks…whatever it is that you enjoy! The idea is to find something that you love to do and that you will stick with over a long period of time. I’m talking a very L-O-N-G time, like your entire life! Don’t make this just some passing phase. 30 minutes of vigorous exercise is great. Or, you may choose to do a 15 minute ‘interval’ session. For this you will alternate between jogging very fast and then slowing down, then speeding up, then slowing down. You can do this for 30 sec. intervals or 1 minute. It is really up to you.

Barack Obama – “Physical Fitness Yields Mental Fitness”

Barack Obama, the President of the United States, is making it to the gym 6-7X/week for 90 minutes. What a great role model. I mean he could have every excuse to not make it, but he understands the importance that physical fitness plays in his role as the leader of his country. He strongly believes that, “physical fitness yields mental fitness.” The two concepts have been married in his mind ever since says his family and friends. I, too, strongly believe that my mind is much more focused and better apt to perform mental tasks more efficiently when I workout that day.

Childhood Obesity: Change Needs To Happen In The Home

I came across an excellent article published in the UK involving families. The government is mandating that PE be implemented 2 hrs each week in the schools. The problem is that the children are not getting any slimmer.

A more recent study decided to focus on the families of these children. Parents were educated on changing their entire behavior by eating more healthy foods and the importance of exercise on a daily level.

The results were quite astonishing.

A review of 64 studies involving 5,230 people found that “children lost up to seven pounds through changing their home diet and activities over 12 months.

An Empowering Moment

Okay, I really need to share an eye opening moment with all of you. My son had some ‘leftover’ french fries on his plate after dinner. They looked very tempting to me. I looked over at my husband and said, “Okay, I can eat these, put them in the fridge, or toss them. What should I do?” He replied, “Toss them!” When I took that plate and slid those fries into the garbage, it was such an exhilarating experience. I felt so empowered. My exact words to Scott, “I feel skinnier from just doing that.” I seriously did. It felt THAT good. He then replied, “You need to do a blog about this.”
