12 years ago I experienced some pretty severe lower back pain that resulted from performing a heavy dead lift without doing a proper warm up first. To be honest, I was trying to show off
I paid the price for several months afterward. I experienced sciatic pain where it hurt too much to sit down. The lower back exercises and stretches in the video above and the ones that I will be sharing with you in future posts all played a significant role in providing me with relief from lower back pain and helped build the solid foundation for a healthy back and body.
During that time I also took the time to visit a chiropractor and massage therapist. I’m sure that it was a combination of the exercises, professional help, healthy eating, and proper rest that resulting in such a speedy recovery for me.
My advice is no substitute for that of a professionally trained doctor and I certainly am not aware of your own unique issues that you may be facing with your lower back pain. I am simply offering some tips to help you in your journey of reducing your lower back pain based on the experiences that I’ve gone through and the experiences of my personal fitness training clients.
As always, please let me know if the tips that I have shared with you have been of help. And if you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to ask.

Yes it is definitely crucial to warm up or you do risk injury. It’s amazing that the lower back is one of the most neglected body parts and no one pays attention until you hurt it.
Thank you for the tips. I’ll be using them!
Scott…YOU ROCK~
Thanks SO much for posting this…the video demo is so helpful to really understand these “small” moves!
I need these & I will use them.
Thanks for everything in 2009.
All the best for your family in 2010!
Excellent Scott. Try a yoga class. Get all that and more! I have had good feed back from my yoga class participants. Yoga would be a great addition to all fitness routines.
Scott, as a paramedic we don’t take the time to warm up and stretch before lifting, these exercises are great as I have had intermittent sciatic pain due to sitting too long and no warm up before lifts…these stretches rock.
Would love to see more back care.
Cheers Bert
Awesome.
THANKS A MILLION. THESE STRETCHES I VALUE MORE THAN THE EXERCISES TO BUILD.
love the video and those stretches…will incorporate for sure!
Thanks, Scott!!
Thanks Scott,
Its been six months i did not do any weight training as i injured my lower back. Sucks BIG TIME! Trying hard to get rid of this pain still. I trying to do this everyday as it does remove some pain i’m having.
Thanks for Videos n i wish u Good Year n health to u and ur family.
Great post! In the future, could you where a tighter shirt (or no shirt) so we can get a better idea of the orientation of your back and hips?
Thanks. You rock!
Thanks for the amazing comments!
Rex, I’ve tried yoga in the past and I experience feelings of anxiety while doing it. Kind of like claustrophobia. It’s really weird, but I’m determined to try it again as I want to experience the many benefits that it offers. I get these same anxious feelings when I do really super slow negatives with weights.
Kamal, your comment made my day. That’s the type of comment that will really help me improve this blog. You can count on me delivering more videos like this to help you improve your overall health.
Elizabeth… you bet! I’ll be sure to wear tighter shirts or no shirt in the future when I demonstrate exercises or workouts like this.
Always useful to have these. More would be welcome.

My lower back always seems to be tight from doing heavy sets of dead lifts. I will give this a try and see if it will help relieve some of my lower back tension.
To be honest, I know I don’t stretch as much as I should. Maybe getting into this routine will help me make a more conscious effort to make stretching part of my daily activities.
