Leg exercises are great for boosting your metabolism and getting your heart rate racing. But I understand that some of the most popular leg exercises such as squats, lunges, and dead lifts can be difficult for you if you are experiencing any kind of knee pain.
That’s why I have created a home workout video for you that demonstrates some of my favorite alternative leg exercises to help you improve the strength of your leg muscles that support your knee joint. Check it out…
Alternative Leg Exercises
You may download this video by right clicking Stability Ball Leg Exercises
I don’t want you to completely throw the idea of ever doing squats and lunges out the window. What I would like you to do is perform the exercises in the video a couple times per week in an effort to strengthen your legs, building up to the point where you will be able to do squats and lunges.
After I had knee surgery from injuring it playing hockey I experienced a great deal of pain. There was no way that I could do squats or lunges. But I was persistent and continued to focus on improving the strength of my leg muscles by performing alternative leg exercises that I could do without experiencing pain. Now I can squat and lunge with ease.
Even if you don’t experience knee pain, these alternative leg exercises are a great way to add variety to your leg training.
Give them a try and let me know what you think. Do you have a favorite? If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
You ROCK!

Just for the record: at the beginning of this year, I was signing up for a whole bunch of exercise related sites, all promising miracles of one kind or another, IF, I bought their program, or their book, or their video, or their supplements, blah, blah, blah.
One by one, I eliminated them from my OK list on my email account. You now are one of two left. I want to thank you for your straight forward approach to exercise and the commitment it takes to make the changes possible.
I enjoy your positive attitude and the fun you have in your vids.
I also like – as crazy as this may sound – the “mistakes” that show up in your vids. They are not slick productions, but honest efforts to share what you know _ which is a lot – with the rest of us.
So thanks, and have a happy holiday to you and your family.
Thanks Mark, you made my day!
Angie and I definitely keep it real. You’ll see my kids, my cat, and mistakes in our videos. We are very much like the people who watch our videos and read our posts… we have busy lives full of interruptions. Having a staged background with a perfect setting is not what most of us are faced with when we workout.
Angie and I will be recording a lot more behind the scenes videos to give you a taste of our everyday life. We’re really going to be opening up and letting you into our lives.
We’re stepping up our game and believe that you totally deserve that from us.
We run a business that rewards us financially, but in all sincerity comments like yours and hearing the successes of our readers is just as rewarding and makes us want to deliver even more great tips to you.
We will be enjoying our holidays and wish you the very best during this time of year and throughout the 2010 and beyond.
Hey there Scott and Angie!
As one who is recovering from knee surgery, these exercises are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! They add to the exercises I already know, creating a nice variety of leg exercises to choose from.
Have an awesome and unstoppable day!
Glad to hear it Cat. How has the recovery been? What kind of range of motion are you experiencing now?
Many of these exercises will definitely help you on the road to complete recovery.
You ROCK Cat! Angie and I are grateful to have you as a friend.
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the honest and positive vibe in the video.
And hats off to you for helping others!
Merry Christmas!
Thanks for sharing helpful exercises and tips.
I see you have PowerBlocks. Those are my favorite exercise tool.
Have a great holiday season.
Thanks Trevor and Eric. Yep, I have a 45 pound Powerblock set and a 25 pound set. I really like them. I also have some hex dumbbells for when I want to change weights really rapidly.
Hi Scott,
First of all, I have to agree with Mark! I always enjoy receiving your e-mails & watching your videos. I’ve learned a lot of fun, creative & new exercises from you & can really sense your commitment to your readers & your passion for what you do. You’re definitely the real deal!
It’s kind of crazy how your e-mail & this video came at just the right time! I’m newly certified as a personal fitness trainer & have recently started my own business. I was just sitting down to create an exercise program for one of my new clients who had an ACL reconstruction a little over 4 months ago. She has the go ahead from her doctor to start working out with me but is very hesitant about her knee to say the least. And to be honest, I was a little hesitant too. But after watching this video, I’ve learned a couple of more exercises that would be safe for her to do & feel much more confident now. Thanks so much…you ROCK! Happy Holiday’s to you & your family!
Hey Scott,
I have just recommended your quick cardio exercise to 6 people and just sent this video out to another person.I think this exercise is especially good for beginners or like someone said that it is good for recovery after an operation or an injury. Either way I am greeting your initiative to post those videos and hope that you will continue to do so. Every single time I find something interesting in your suggestions, creating this unending source of inspiration.
I might not apply everything by the book (you know me already) but the base is the same.
keep up the good job Scott
I have been to pt for a rotator cuff impingement…still not better..yet doctor said mri said no tear…can you give excercises for the shoulder and elbow area…both have effected the use of my bi-cep muscle and range of motion. Thanks for your website and help! Evy
Thanks Susan. Let me know how these exercises help your client out.
You ROCK Traian! It means the world to me hearing that you are sharing these workouts and exercises with your friends and colleagues.
You bet Evy! I have a video already that I can upload for you in one of my upcoming posts. I’ll probably record another one with a few new exercises too. It’s amazing how everything is connected and effects each other. I had an issue where my biceps muscle was affecting my shoulder and another time when my chest muscle was affecting my shoulder. Neck issues can even affect your wrists. That’s why it’s so important to take care of our body as a whole.
Love these, will certainly incorporate them into my routine!
Have a great Festive Season!
Again I can’t see the video? I have just had an arthroscopy on my left knee, this vid sounds just what I need. Can anyone help me as to why I can’t see your video’s. I have tried down loading from your link, but it takes so long I end up deleteing (i’m talking a long time. . . . .)
Any help would be great.
JL
Dude!
The wall squat on ball rocks. I forgot about it and it’s been months I didn’t do it.
Thanks for reminding me.
Have a great day.
Hi Scoot,
First off I have to tip my hat to you on this one buddy! I myself have knee issues as a result of bad rupture I suffered and had surgery of my right patellar tendon in 2001.
Since then I have been searching for low impact workouts to avoid the pain in my knee. I have tried swimming to aid with this issue but always had a hunger for indoor activities to assist in strength building without compromising myself with the pain. So you can pat yourself on the back for me on this one because this range of workouts is just what I needed. Thanks for the great video.
Best Regards,
Mr. Meltdown
Hey you! Sorry it took so long to get back to you
I have 130 degree bend. I need 3 degrees for total straightening. That and strengthening are the targets.
Recovery has not been as easy as I thought would be. But it was a definite plus that I was in the gym prior to it. My doc says my recovery is “amazing” and I think my determination during therapy even has surprised some of the therapists.
I REALLY want to get back to the gym and doing what I was doing. So I am rocking the therapy. 2010 is MY year!
Thank YOU sir for doing what you do. And thank Angie for me as well. I still and always will believe that if it weren’t for you two, I would still be that miserable and depressed 230lb person! Have a great New Year!
Some great ideas in this videos, Im always on the look out for differnt things to do in my sessions.
Nice work!
Cheers
Max
Hi Scott, thanks for sharing this exercise video, I’ve never seen some of these exercises, you really do have a talent with this.
